Comparative & Evolutionary Physiology Section — Chair: Graham Scott — Co-Chair:
Hypoxia-tolerant animals have evolved exquisite mechanisms for coping with oxygen deprivation, often honed by many generations of natural selection. These species can provide unique perspectives and a wealth of insight into how physiological function can be maintained in low oxygen conditions, which are a similar feature of many clinical disorders. This session will feature presentations on the mechanisms of hypoxia tolerance in various animal species that encounter hypoxia naturally. Comparative perspectives on the role of cellular hypoxia signalling in hypoxia tolerance will be integrated with insights into the various mechanism of hypoxia tolerance in animals.
