Lung development is complex, orchestrating more than forty cell types and resulting in an immense network of alveoli and capillaries of over 600 sq. ft. Many of the pathways associated with development are shared as mechanisms of repair in response to injury. These essential pathways can be altered by external influences resulting in epigenetic changes including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and expression of non-coding RNAs (including microRNAs). This featured topic will include studies investigating the effects of disrupted development, adverse environments, and acute injuries on epigenetic changes in the lung.
