Impact of Dairy Based Nutritional Interventions on Cardiometabolic Health

This featured topic will be focused around the impact of dairy based nutritional intervention of cardiometabolic health.  As a functional food dairy has been recognized for its nutritional benefits containing natural antihypertensive agents, and for providing quality sources of protein. Epidemiological data strongly support the health benefits of chronic dairy consumption on (1) blood pressure, and other measures of vascular function, and (2) metabolic health, but little is known about the precise mechanisms mediating these health effects.  The chosen speakers will discuss their mechanistic studies on the impact of controlled dairy feeding on both cardiovascular and muscle metabolic health in relevant clinical populations. Dr. Anna Stanhewicz will present studies examining mixed nutrient effects of dairy and sodium with acute dairy consumption on the microcirculation. Dr. Adam Konopka will discuss the potential role of dairy intake on skeletal muscle protein turnover during nutritional and exercise interventions in older adults at risk of metabolic disease.
