Autophagy: driver of microbiome composition and intestinal homeostasis

Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved catabolic pathway that removes cytoplasmic components through lysosomal degradation. Autophagy promotes cell survival and restores cell homeostasis in response to cellular stressors such as starvation, damaged organelles, or the invasion of microorganisms. The mechanisms by which autophagy contributes to intestinal homeostasis will be discussed, focusing on its cell type-specific roles in regulating gut pathogens clearance, innate immunity, and inflammation.
