Twenty Years of Physiological Genomics
Symposium — Tuesday, April 25, 2024 — 3:15 PM - 5:15 PM — , Room W190B
History of Physiology Group — Chair: David L. Mattson — Co-Chair:
Twenty years ago, the APS President, Allen Cowley, summarized the results of discussions held by an international group of scientists that met in February of 1997 in an article titled: Genomics to Physiology and Beyond: How Do We Get There? (The Physiologist 40(5): 205, 1997). These discussions not only helped lead to the formation of the Physiological Genomics journal, but also signaled the advent of the use of physiological genomic methods, techniques, and approaches which have permeated the scientific work of APS investigators working to uncover the links between genes and physiology at all levels of biological organization. This symposium is designed to celebrate the original concept, provide an overview of the original issues facing the journal as it was established, and then discuss the evolution of the field over the past 20 years and beyond. The proposed speakers, many of whom are past Editors of the journal, will each bring a different perspective. Potential chairs for this symposium include Andrew Greene (Medical College of Wisconsin), Anne Kwitek (University of Iowa), Michael Garrett (University of Mississippi), and Carol Moreno Quinn (Medimmune Cambridge).
