Sleep, Circadian Clocks and Metabolism
Symposium — Monday, April 24, 2024 — 3:15 PM - 5:15 PM — , Room W190B
Endocrinology and Metabolism Section — Chair: Eve Van Cauter — Co-Chair: Willis K. Samson
Evidence from animal models and from experimental as well as epidemiologic studies in humans has accumulated to reveal mechanistic links between sleep regulation, the circadian system and cellular and systemic metabolism. The present symposium will review seminal studies and emerging work addressing the implications of sleep deficiency and circadian disturbances on cardio-metabolic function. Evidence supporting a role for the sympathetic nervous system as a major mediating pathway will be presented. The interactions between the aging process and sleep & circadian regulation and the potential beneficial effects of interventions to optimize sleep quality and circadian alignment will be discussed.
