Curricular Innovation in Sex and Gender Based Medical Physiology Education

Discoveries in sex and gender differences in health and disease are now beginning to impact clinical practice as we move closer to the ideal of individualized medicine. This refresher course is targeted toward the medical school instructor who desires to update their course or lecture content with clinically relevant information on sex and gender differences in physiology. Four lectures will be presented which together cover a broad spectrum of topics taught in medical physiology. Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, Chief Research Officer of the Laura Bush Institute for Womens Health will discuss why and how to integrate a sex and gender-based curriculum into an existing medical physiology course. Dr. Gillian Einstein, Director of the Collaborative Program in Womens Health at the University of Toronto will discuss the impact of sex hormones on cognition. Dr. Kent Thornburg, Director of the Moore institute for Nutrition and Wellness at Oregon Health and Sciences University will provide an update on how sex differences in fetal programming impacts the health of adults. And finally, Dr. Virginia Miller, Director of the Womens Health Research Center at Mayo Clinic will provide an overview of clinically important findings on sex and gender differences in cardiovascular function. Attendees will be provided with links to resources that can be used to guide the development of a sex and gender based medical physiology curriculum.
