Sexual Dimorphism, Plasticity and Genomic Diversity of the Paraventricular Nucleus

The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus is the nodal point for the integration of multiple homeostatic responses. Neurons in this area display both unique and overlapping phenotypic identities and functions. This symposium will examine the genomic basis of those interactions to endogenous signals and the environment (Dr. Ferguson). Important sexual dimorphisms, targeted responses, and unique signaling mechanisms recently recognized to underlie the coordination of multiple afferent and efferent connections will be discussed (Dr. Bains). Important consideration then will be given to how sexual dimorphisms are expressed in terms of physiologic to responses endogenous signals and the environment with a focus on the maintenance of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis (Dr. Santollo) and autonomic regulation of cardiovascular function (Dr. Barnes).
