Non-Canonical Functions of the Lung in Immunity and Hemostasis

Symposium — Sunday, April 22, 2024 — 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM — Convention Center, Room 27
Respiration Section — Chair: Wolfgang M Kuebler — Co-Chair: Jatinder K Juss

In addition to its traditional physiological role in gas exchange, new non-canonical functions of the lung have emerged in recent years by which the lung contributes relevantly to classic functions of the immune and hemostatic systems. As such, the lung has recently been identified as a relevant site of platelet biogenesis and a reservoir for hematopoietic progenitors. Likewise, lung parenchymal cells have been shown to express factor XII (Hageman factor) which seems to exert important regulatory effects in the alveolar space in lung infection, inflammation, and remodeling that are largely independent from its classic role as activator of the intrinsic (contact activation) coagulation cascade. Finally, recent studies indicate more complex roles for monocytes, both within the circulation and after their migration into the lung, that extend beyond the formation of tissue macrophages, and imply important roles for monocytes in adaptive immunity as antigen-presenting cells. In this symposium, we aim to highlight these emerging non-canonical functions of the lung in immunity and hemostasis. To this end, we will feature three presentations by leading experts in the field.
