Bench to Bedside Approaches to Human Disease

Symposium — Saturday, April 21, 2024 — 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM — Convention Center, Room 27
American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) — Chair: Cherry Wongtrakool — Co-Chair: Samantha Yeligar

Understanding the pathophysiology of human disease often requires a combination of approaches.  In this symposium, participants will learn that preclinical and translational models can be successfully used to learn more about three human diseases.  Participants will acquire a broad sense of the differences between approaches, as well as their benefits and pitfalls.

Learning Objectives:

• Compare pre-clinical and translational models of different human diseases and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

•Describe how animal models of HIV can be used to identify underlying pathophysiology.

Summarize how fibrinogen mutations may play a key role in preventing the resolution of pulmonary embolism

Speakers

  • Metabolic comorbidities of alcohol and SIV/HIV.
Liz Simon — LSU Sch. of Med.

  • Understanding complications of HIV-1 using HIV-1 transgenic models.
Roy Sutliff — Emory Univ. Sch. of Med.

  • Connecting the clots: from acute pulmonary thromboembolism to chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
Timothy Morris — UCSD Sch. of Med.
