Tissue-Distributed Control of Sex Differences in Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
Symposium — Tuesday, April 24, 2024 — 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM — Convention Center, Room 20A
Integrative Physiology Symposium Series — Chair: John M. Stafford — Co-Chair:
There are male-female differences in most disease states. Women are protected from the development of hypertension, insulin resistance and atherosclerotic heart disease with obesity, yet at higher risk of auto-immune inflammatory diseases. The mechanisms by which being female puts individuals at risk of some diseases and protection from others is likely due to distributed control of estrogen and androgen action across many organ systems. In this symposium, the speakers explore tissue-selective mechanisms for sex-differences in metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. John Stafford will speak on liver-specific roles estrogens and androgen action in the control of hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism with obesity. Dr. Susan Fried will talk on sex-differences in adipose tissue growth and remodling and how they contribute to metabolic risk. Dr. Elizabeth Murphy will talk about estrogen and cardioprotection. Dr. Nadine Dragin will talk about estrogens and immune function and autoimmunity.
